JEM TYLEY-MILLER

We are still on a high after celebrating ten wonderful years of the Peter Carey Award. What a day it was with Peter Carey himself 'dialling in' to wish everyone luck.
Congratulations again to @ali_m_martin for the win, @oscarrevelins our runner-up, Steph Pama for Best Local Entry, and all those who placed in the Moorabool Young Writers' Awards. Thanks to our wonderful judges @laurajeanmckay and @allysenear, and also to @annecaseyhardy and @gregfoyster for entertaining us with readings from past winning stories. What a massive, joyous day it was.
Please lookout for the winning stories in @overlandlitmag, our new publishing partner.
Wayne and I couldn't do this without the support of @et_sek.eta, Moorabool Libraries, Moorabool Shire Council, and of course Peter Carey.

We are thrilled to announce the longlist for the 2026 Peter Carey Short Story Award!!

For our milestone tenth year, we received over 400 short stories from writers Australia-wide. Our longlisting panel (Brooke Dunnell, Gillian Hagenus and Adam Brannigan) faced the difficult job of narrowing that submission pool to just a small number of standout stories.

Judging for Best Local Entry is still underway, with the winner announced along with the first and second-placed stories in the general category on Saturday 13 June at a special awards ceremony at the Lerderderg Library in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. Further
details for this event will be announced with the posting of the shortlist later in May.

As always, we’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to the many writers who submitted work, and to wish the finalists the very best of luck. Our head judge, Laura Jean McKay – author of the recent short story collection Gunflower, as well as the novel The Animals
in that Country and the short story collection Holiday in Cambodia – has commenced her deliberation on the longlist.

There is nothing better than watching your friends launch their books. Yesterday @waynemarshall2505 fans swarmed the Lerderderg Library to celebrate the arrival of HENRY GOES BUSH. There was so much love in the room, utterly delightful speeches from Michael Winkler and Alex Cothren, and Wayne left us with not a dry eye in the place. It was so much fun!! I got to ride in on a hobbies horse and chat to so many of my favourite people. This book is a rollicking read. I think everyone deserves a little piece of its magic. Not only is Wayne Marshall an incredible human, he is truly a masterful storyteller.

Trying to take a picture of Wayne Marshall's incredible genre-defying book HENRY GOES BUSH and was constantly photobombed by Enid. She has sat on the book over and over and therefore has read it several times. Like me, she thinks it's an absolute joy to read - a wild, rollicking gallop straight into the midst of the epic battle between Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. I was squealing with childhood delight when I read an earlier draft of this story and cannot wait to dive in now it's an actual book, as soon as Enid will let me. For someone who has always been team Banjo I'm wondering if @waynemarshall2505 will eventually convince me to become Team Henry, and if I will ever think of Australia's bizarre and brutal colonial past in the same way.

What a brilliant night it was in Brunswick celebrating the launch of Michael Winkler's new book GRIEFDOGG. A truly joyous occasion. I started reading last night and am already loving it!
