Meanjin published my first ever short story. It was the first time I received payment for my writing and the first time I felt like a real writer.

Meanjin have been our publishing partner at the Peter Carey Award for many years now. They have played an important part in the success of our award, for it is many a writer's dream to be granted space in those hallowed pages. Naturally, we are devestated by its closure; our country and the future of our literary landscape are poorer for it.

Lou Callow from Wombat Arts has captured my short story 'The Caretaker' so beautifully. I can't wait to hang it above my writing desk when the exhibition is over.

Last night saw the opening of a fantastic new exhibition - a collaboration between Moorabool Young Writers' Award and Wombat Arts called Write Where You Are: every story tells a picture. As volunteer organisers of the writing award, Wayne Marshall and I were generously included, along with junior entrants in this wonderful project, thanks to the incredible Kristie Seketa from Moorabool Libraries. Artists adopted a story from local storytellers, reflected on it and made it their own. On now to read and view at the gorgeous new Ballan Library.

My daughter got to meet her favourite author Thursday night. I love that writers are her superheroes. She was well chuffed and even had the courage to ask a question. Thank you for making her month @vanessa.len_writes.

What a brilliant celebration of short-story writing yesterday at the Lerderderg Library in Bacchus Marsh. Congratulations to Amanda Hildebrandt, who took out the top prize at this year's Peter Carey Short Story Award, and Patrick Eades for second place. Look out for their stories in Meanjin.

Jane O'Sullivan's 'Body Pillow' was highly commended. For the first time in competition history a Bacchus Marsh local made our shortlist and Jamie Castellas is the deserving winner of Best Local Entry. Thank you to our wonderful judge - former winner Andrew Roff - who finally received his giant novelty cheque, and to our longlisting judges Brooke Dunnell, Eugen Bacon and Gillian Hagenus.
